Small World Christian Kindergarten is one of Hong Kong’s longest-established preschools, located in the heart of Mid-Levels. Since opening in 1986, it has grown into a close-knit international community, with more than 250 students and a global network of alumni.
Known for its play-based approach and strong sense of community, the school offers an early years experience shaped by curiosity, creativity and care, while preparing children for the transition into leading international primary schools.
For a more personal perspective on the school’s approach, read our recent conversation with the principal.

A play-based approach to early years learning
Small World’s approach to learning is rooted in the belief that early education should feel engaging, purposeful and genuinely enjoyable. The school follows the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC), widely used by international preschools in Hong Kong, which supports learning through a play-based, enquiry-led framework. Children are encouraged to explore, question and build confidence at their own pace, with equal emphasis placed on social, emotional and academic development. Alongside this, the school’s Biblical Foundations Curriculum introduces themes of character, compassion and resilience through a story-led approach.

A strong sense of values and community
While the school continues to evolve, its core philosophy has remained consistent. Small World places the child at the centre of everything it does, with a focus on supporting development across academic, physical, social and emotional areas. The aim is to provide a strong foundation for the years ahead, while creating an environment where children feel secure, understood and encouraged to grow in confidence.
That sense of care extends beyond the classroom. Small World is known for its close-knit community, with many families maintaining long-standing connections to the school. The emphasis on kindness, respect and inclusion shapes daily life, creating a setting where both children and parents feel genuinely supported.

Language and Mandarin learning
Mandarin is integrated naturally into the daily routine, with dedicated teachers guiding children through language exposure in a relaxed and engaging way. Rather than formal instruction, the school uses a story-led approach, encouraging listening, speaking and interaction through play and conversation.
This method allows children to build familiarity and confidence over time, supported by meaningful, real-life context. Traditional Chinese characters are introduced in a way that connects to everyday life in Hong Kong, helping children develop both language skills and cultural awareness.
A collaborative approach with families
Parental involvement is an integral part of life at Small World, extending the learning experience beyond the classroom. Regular events and shared activities offer families a window into their child’s day-to-day experience, while also strengthening the connection between home and school.
Community moments such as the annual Taste of Culture bring families together, celebrating the diversity of backgrounds within the school. Children are encouraged to share elements of their own culture, creating a sense of pride and curiosity about the world around them.
More informal moments, including parent-child classroom sessions, allow children to guide their parents through activities, from creative play to storytelling. These experiences not only reinforce learning, but also give children a sense of ownership and confidence within their environment.

A long-standing presence in Hong Kong
Since opening in 1986, Small World has grown into a well-established part of Hong Kong’s early years landscape, with generations of families passing through its classrooms. What began as a small community has developed into a diverse and internationally minded school, while retaining the same sense of warmth and familiarity that defined it from the outset.
That continuity is reflected in the number of families who return to the school over time, drawn by its consistent approach and strong community ties.
Looking ahead
Small World continues to invest in its learning environment, with ongoing enhancements to both indoor and outdoor spaces, including its garden and play areas. The focus remains on creating a setting where children feel secure, engaged and able to explore with confidence.
At its core, the school remains defined by its sense of community. The aim is not only to support children through their early years, but to create an environment where families feel connected, welcomed and part of something lasting.
