From the moment they arrive to the end of the day, students engage in both English and Mandarin, immersed in a fully bilingual environment from 12 months through to 12 years old. In the elementary years, this continues with an additional 45-minute Mandarin lesson each day, delivered in small groups tailored to individual proficiency levels. Daily Chinese homework reinforces reading and writing skills, ensuring steady progress. It’s entirely routine to find students learning science, presenting research, or listening to a story about planetary orbit — all in Mandarin. With two teachers always present in the classroom, students move fluidly between both languages, developing confidence and ease in bilingual communication.

Preparing students for life

IMS students are guided by their interests, experience the joy of discovery, and take ownership of their learning by setting and following their own vision. This process involves not only independently planning, setting goals, researching, vetting sources, and interviewing experts, but also developing critical behind-the-scenes skills — such as managing time effectively, tracking progress, and resolving group conflicts.

Alongside academic instruction, teachers act as consultants, meeting with students weekly to review their progress. These regular check-ins empower students to become comfortable with feedback, reflect on their work habits and organisation, and build resilience in the face of challenges.

“A curious student is far more likely to become a lifelong learner, which means they’ll have the skills to adapt and grow, no matter what life throws at them,” says IMS founder Karin Ann. “Even from the time they start walking, IMS students are encouraged to make their own choices and act on them. By the age of 12, they’ve become self-starters, go-getters, and doers — versatile individuals who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get things done.”

Whether leading their own hobby clubs, organising charitable sales of student-made products, conducting assemblies, producing talent shows, or debating peers at the Montessori Model United Nations, IMS students are continually engaged with the world around them. From classroom to community: Cultivating the entrepreneurial spirit

From these regular school experiences, active lifelong learners emerge. In a rapidly evolving world, the ability to embrace growth is essential for the next generation. In 2024, fifth graders Mackenzie, Kean, and Timothy teamed up to create and sell bespoke keychains to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House — an NGO close to their hearts, as a friend undergoing cancer treatment was staying there. While their exquisite resin coasters, delicately crafted with pressed flowers and butterflies, drew plenty of admiration, it was the journey behind the project that truly stood out.

This trio of ten-year-olds submitted a formal proposal to pitch their idea, developed a business plan, spent weeks testing and perfecting their resin products, designed the logo and packaging, managed sales, and analysed their profits. “To make one resin, it takes two to four days. We strongly believe imperfect products cannot be sold. It’s fun but challenging,” said Mackenzie. Their dedication paid off — with sales exceeding expectations, their time, effort, and perseverance were richly rewarded.

The entrepreneurial perseverance it takes to achieve goals is cultivated over and over in these opportunities, while these young students become invested in giving back to their community regularly. Learning at IMS is not just about receiving information, but applying it purposefully, bouncing back from mistakes, and seeing visible outcomes from one’s own process.

Building real-world connections in a mixed-age classroom 

The three-year mixed-age environment at IMS plays a vital role in supporting student growth and development. Sharing a classroom for three consecutive years allows students and teachers to build strong, respectful relationships, giving teachers the insight needed to recognise individual strengths and guide each student’s progress with intention. This continuity is key to deep learning and a truly transformative educational experience.

The three-year cycle also creates natural opportunities for peer mentoring — students learn from one another, take on leadership roles, and develop collaboration skills in ways that are rarely possible in traditional classroom settings.

In the mixed-age classroom, each child has the opportunity to experience both being the youngest and the eldest within the community — a unique experience that’s not possible in a single-age setting.
