Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden: A Nature Escape in Hong Kong’s New Territories

Originally established to provide agricultural support to local farmers and promote sustainable livelihoods, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) has grown into one of Hong Kong’s most meaningful outdoor destinations. Located in the hills of Tai Po in the New Territories, the conservation and education centre offers visitors the chance to reconnect with nature while learning about biodiversity, wildlife protection and sustainable living.

Set within a deep valley framed by two mountain ridges, the farm is shaped by forested slopes and natural streams that wind through lush landscapes. Today, Kadoorie Farm spans themed gardens, vegetable terraces and conservation facilities, alongside more than 8 kilometres of walking trails and 9 kilometres of scenic access roads, making it a rewarding destination for families, hikers and anyone looking to experience Hong Kong’s greener side.

Seasonal Nature Highlights

The cooler winter months and Lunar New Year period are particularly beautiful times to visit Kadoorie Farm. Native Hong Kong plants begin to bloom across the mountainside, adding vibrant colour to the landscape. Visitors can spot flowering apricot trees, delicate Chinese New Year flowers, bright pink Taiwan cherry blossoms and striking red azaleas, transforming the farm into one of Hong Kong’s most scenic seasonal nature walks.

Wildlife Encounters at Kadoorie Farm

Wildlife conservation remains at the heart of Kadoorie Farm’s mission. The recently renovated Monkey Haven provides an enriched environment for resident Rhesus Macaque and Long-Tailed Macaque groups, offering visitors the opportunity to observe these animals in thoughtfully designed habitats. Guests may also meet newer residents, including Moung Moung and her troop.

At the Parrot Sanctuary, rescued birds continue to thrive under specialist care. Recent arrivals include sulphur-crested cockatoos Chow Chow and Tin Tin, alongside salmon-crested cockatoo Moby, highlighting the farm’s ongoing rehabilitation and education work.

Workshops, Exhibitions and Nature Experiences

Kadoorie Farm regularly hosts workshops and guided experiences designed to encourage mindfulness, creativity and deeper engagement with the natural environment.
